ALBUM REVIEW: Steak Number Eight – Kosmokoma

Time for a dose of stoner metal by a band with a name that sounds like the menu in a cheap steakhouse, but which actually has an impressive pedigree. From start to end there is never a moment that the experience should stop. Previous post Next post. The only drawback with Steak Number Eight, and as good losmokoma this album is — faultless almost and no doubt one that genre addicts will find addictive — is that I feel the nnumber is selling itself short.

I note the name-checks with the likes of Pelican and Isis but to be honest this release has more in common with Baroness with the infectious groove of Queens of the Stone Strak thrown in. Return Of The Koloman kicks in and it is a flood of energy.

Who is behind the production? This is what friends do, they make music, but four friends from Belgium? At an average age of 23 the band are mature in their writing and are definitely in control of their sound.

Gravity Giants keeps this riff until a trippy clean section, which builds to a pulsing kick drum. They may koxmokoma in their early twenties, but they are forcing their way ahead of those they once aspired to be.

Craig Hibberd Friendship plays a big part in bands, without it, you lose all creative purpose. None of the songs on Kosmokoma are unworthy, though it might have been nice to see a more attention-grabbing opener.

Ave Noctum Your Kosmo,oma. Return Of The Kolomon starts the album off in blazing fashion, with drummer Joris Casier building the momentum with a steady, energising drum beat.

Each member of the four-piece has plenty of time in the spotlight, the guitarists building up the musical picture via insistent melodies and a few hulking riffs that pay homage to their sludge roots as well as more modern metal.

Friendship plays a big part in bands, without numebr, you lose all creative purpose. The overall sound in the opening segment is rather dreamy, as if waking to a world with new eyes; soft exposure.

Gravity Giants stands tall. Sludge Metal is where they are placed in the musical web of sub-genres, but they weave from that and form what can only be described as Eighy, whatever the hell that is.

Kosmokoma is a fine album but not enough to catapult this band into upper ranks where it truly belongs. Crushing in its groove. The first thing you will notice when the track starts is the production. It is a crushing track.
